One Year Today! I can’t believe it has been a year since Ian Millar and I sat in a Panera Bread in Colorado Springs and began to dream up this company now called QSpike! It’s amazing how similar the current company is to the original idea that was born that day. Would you join me as I take a trip down memory lane?
It was Friday afternoon when we decided to grab lunch. I had just been caught in a round of layoffs from my last employer and I was debating another start-up. It had been a few years since I had sold my last company and that entrepreneurial urge was getting the best of me.
Over lunch we discussed various ideas, but we were intent on leveraging the 32 years and 40,000 hours of combined outsourcing experience in a new and upcoming market. We kept coming back to this idea about “how can we help experts become recognized on-line as they are in the real world?” It seemed like a good idea, but how to package it was proving to be a challenge.
A few weeks later I was sitting in a Twitter class put on by a good friend of mine, Kevin Knebl. About half-way through, a gentleman energetically interrupted the class “Kevin! Kevin! I get it … how do I hire you to do this for me?” Kevin smiled and said “I don’t do this for people, I train you to do it”. That was the Genesis moment of QSpike. It was at that moment that all of the ideas we had been tossing around came into focus. I saw a clear picture for what we were to become: Outsourced Social Media Services.
That sounds clean and simple, but the processes, procedures, structure, measures, reporting – all the stuff that makes a company successful – those have been the REAL challenges that have taken a good portion of the past year to put together.
During that time there have been a lot of challenges – good and bad. One of the most challenging was in February when Ian and I made the decision to go in different directions. The good news is we are still committed friends, and he still has an equity stake in QSpike, but that kind of experience is not a fun thing to go through. I still enjoy when we can grab coffee and I can update him on what is happening with QSpike.
So where is QSpike on the anniversary of its formation? Wow! What a ride it has been (and continues to be). We have a number of great clients that keep us hopping, and we are positioned for tremendous growth in the coming year. We have a full pipeline of potential customers, and the word is getting out. Just this week we were interviewed on Castle Rock Radio. Sondra Calhoun and Robert McMahan who host Effective Leadership Strategies had a couple of us on the show to talk about Social Media (click on this Link and tell me what you think). We helped them launch their new site and get headed in the right direction with their social media strategy.
But none of this would have been possible without the help and support of so many people! Thank you to ALL of you who have stood by us, encouraged us, read and commented on our blogs, spent time on the phone for endless hours and at all times of the day and night, invested your time, expertise and money … to you we are eternally grateful.
I hope this next year sees our economy pick up and unemployment rates drop. I intend to have QSpike do its part by putting some great people to work and providing exceptional Social Media services to our customers – both existing and yet to come. If you have been following along this past year, drop me a line and tell me what you think so far. I would love to hear from you.
